How Julia Schroeder used SPLICE and art to face life with confidence after cancer

After participating in the SPLICE program as a young cancer patient, Julia Schroeder received a scholarship to pursue her passion for art. She chose a Certificate IV in Visual Arts at Box Hill Institute. With her cancer now in remission, Julia wants to use her qualification as a pathway into a diploma or degree. She's also keen to give back. Her dream is to use art therapy to help others.

The faculty staff, educators and guidance counsellors are all very helpful and welcoming. I find it easy to access the classrooms, the librarians are really friendly, and I feel at ease being mixed with different age groups.

Jacinta Kay

Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design

Jacinta enrolled in Box Hill Institute's Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design, and she has gone on to study a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Visual Communication Design) at Deakin University. She said, "I've done both university and TAFE, and TAFE is far more hands on and practical. University is complimentary to TAFE, but if you really want to learn the skills needed in the real world, you can't go past hands-on, intensive learning."

Dennis Ioannou

Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design

Like many creative people, Dennis dabbled in different fields of study and work before one day he was paid for a design he had created. That is when he realised that graphic design was a vocation worth pursuing and he enrolled in Box Hill Institute's Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design. Dennis admits that the course was the most challenging study he has done, but it is also the most fulfilling. He said, "I thought it was very time-consuming and challenging but in hindsight, it was a great preparation for the industry.

Alumni

Tess Whitfort

Tess chose to study a Bachelor of Fashion because she enjoys the academic side of studying as well as the practical, creative side, and she chose Box Hill Institute for its "down to earth approach, small class sizes, and it's quite close to where I live."
